System 7: Will it read/write 1.4 mb Diskettes?

I have an Applied Engineering AE 3.5 Plus external floppy drive. On the box it says it provides "Full SuperDrive compatability for all non-Superdrive Macs" Mac Plus, SE, and II.

My Mac Plus is running OS 6 and does not recognize a new Mac formatted 1.4 3.5" floppy. I am wondering if I install OS 7 if it would work? Or do I need some sort of software plugin or added hardware?
